Teen Area Focus Group Meeting

The students of Mercer MS, Stone Hill MS, Freedom HS, and Briar Woods HS are invited to participate in a Teen Focus Group meeting to discuss the Teen Area in the new Gum Spring Library. We are excited to see the building being constructed, and are looking for the input of our students to make this a welcoming place for them to do research for class assignments, meet for group projects, or just hang out.

The interior design architect from Samaha Architects, Loudoun County Public Library personnel, and the Friends of the Gum Spring Library will lead the discussion, but we need your help to get the students involved. The more input we have, the more successful the focus group will be and the better the library will serve our community!

This meeting will take place on Monday, May 9th from 7-8:30 pm at Mercer MS auditorium. Please spread the word!

FROGS Walk Registration Begins at 9 AM

Come out for a day of FUN -- FUN bounce, FUN raffle prizes, FUN face painting, and a FUN 2 mile walk for the whole family, all while supporting the Gum Spring Library! The Fun starts at 9am and the Walk starts at 10am. 2-mile easy walk begins and ends at the Stone Ridge Information Center: 24609 Nettle Mill Sq., Aldie, VA 20105.

Online registration for the FROGS Walk is now closed, but Walk-Day registration begins at 9am at the Stone Ridge Information Center. Cash or check only, please. Extra Walk T-shirts will be available to Walkers on a first come, first serve basis.

The program is for children 2 years of age and older and their parents or caregivers and will be held at the Community Room at the Dulles South Safety Center on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 11 am. All proceeds will benefit the Gum Spring Library.

GUM SPRING LIBRARY BOND PASSES!

Loudoun County voted November 6th, 55% in favor of issuing bonds to pay for the interior completion of the Gum Spring Library.

A big thank you to all the businesses and individuals who supported the Friends of the Gum Spring Library (FROGS) at our silent auction on February 10th. We had approximately 100 items to bid on, and made $4,000 to support future library programs. Screech, the Nationals’ mascot greeted the guests while Redskin Pat Fischer encouraged our young athletes and reminisced with the older fans in the crowd. Watch for announcements about our ground breaking celebration this summer!

During a public meeting on January 9th, 2007 at Mercer Middle School, Grimm & Parker Architects unveiled the architectural drawings for the Gum Spring Library.

The addition of a community library in Dulles South will immediately add 160,000 books and 40,000 square feet of library space to the Loudoun County Public Library System. The additional books and space will allow the Loudoun County Public Library to meet the Virginia Library Association’s Standard of Services adopted by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors. The Gum Spring Library will provide the much needed professional staff, books and materials that will encourage children to become lifelong readers. Teens and older adults will have access to a welcoming environment of information and all community members will have a world of technology waiting for them at the library.

Construction of Gum Spring Library:
Loudoun County’s largest developer/county government partnership.
Van Metre Companies will deed the first two floors (40,000 sq. ft.) to Loudoun County for Gum Spring Library.
Van Metre Companies will break ground on a four story shell summer 2006.

Location/Access of Gum Spring Library:
Located on Stone Springs Boulevard and Route 50.
Will be set in an environmentally enriched area.
Will have two entrances – one for the upper floor businesses and one for the library.

Budget Status of Gum Spring Library:
Current budget proposal includes $7.63 million to build and furnish.
Bond referendum planned for
November 2007.
Library opens Fall 2008.
